A Day in the Life…

“A Day in the Life…” is a photographic essay of small rural Irish town – Callan, Co Kilkenny and it’s environs, captured on a single day, 800 years after it was granted it’s town charter in 1207.

I undertook this project in July 2007, an extremely wet month – it rained every single day, except the day these images were captured. My intention was to freeze-frame a 12 hour block of history, to capture the activities of a small rural town, it’s people, it’s mood, the atmosphere of the town and it’s appearance.

Framing History

I thoroughly enjoyed the shoot, I was completely ‘in the zone’ for it’s duration and everybody seemed to be in good mood, possibly due to the bright day and sunshine – the first in many weeks. I was totally fixed in the present moment during the shoot, the effect being, neither I, nor the subjects of the images were conscious of the framing in history of that day. Now just 9 years later, this body of work is a document, a social and economic statement of a small rural Irish town at the peak of the celtic tiger.

A Day in the Life

Some of the images were exhibited in Callan during the Callan 800 celebrations, the period of the exhibition extended and continued during Kilkenny Arts Festival 2007. Most of the images captured on that day were archived. I now hope to publish the entire collection over time.

A Day in the Life… galleries are currently a work in progress. I’m working on the previously unpublished images and will add them to the collection on completion – watch this spot, you’d never know who might pop up here over the next while.

 Your Story

The ability of the camera is limited, if you appear in the images or if you have a story to tell of that period (July 2007), we’d all love to hear it, leave a comment below. This collection is only as rich as the captured image without your input.

The Banner

The banner in Kilkenny county colours was suspended across Green Street during the Callan 800 activities, it carried the crest and a byline referring to a folklore prediction regarding the principal county town of Co. Kilkenny.

It went “Kells was… Kilkenny is… and Callan will be… the finest of all three”.
